Adult ESL Classes

Registration Information

Fall Classes: Weekday classes start Sept 8, 2025.

Saturday classes start Sept 13, 2025. Registration by email or phone starts September 2, 2025.

New Learners

New learners must contact the YMCA for an appointment, , by phone at 416-925-5462, or email them at . You can also contact our Continuing Education Office (416 338-4300) if you need assistance making an appointment.

Returning Learners

Is this program right for me?

Who is eligible for free classes*?

Our classes are free if you are a:

  • Permanent Resident
  • Refugee Claimant
  • Live-In Caregiver Program participant
  • Canadian Citizens born outside of Canada
  • Convention Refugees/Protected Persons
  • Persons who have a letter of initial approval of permanent residence from Citizenship and Immigration Canada
  • Foreign domestic workers admitted under the Live-In Caregiver program
  • Provincial nominees, or their dependents, who have been approved through the Opportunities Ontario Provincial Nominee Program but have not yet been processed to receive permanent resident status

What to expect from the program

English as a Second Language Classes

These general classes teach learners English using the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Classes are offered at literacy, beginner, intermediate, advanced and TOEFL levels.

English for Business Skills/Computers

These programs focus on language skills for success in the workplace. A variety of programs are offered in business communication, accounting, job search and the use of computers.

English for Special Needs Programs

These programs are for learners with emotional and/or mental health difficulties.

English for TOEFL /IELTS/Academic Purposes

These programs help intermediate and advanced students prepare for TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and other professional or academic goals, such as attending secondary schools, colleges or universities. This course is also for students planning to requalify in their professions in Canada.
