Upcoming Consultations
The ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø (³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø) invites ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø students, staff, families, community organizations, and community members who self-identify as part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community to attend a community consultation this Spring. These consultations will support the development of a multi-dimensional strategy to affirm the diverse and intersectional 2SLGBTQ+ identities and address biphobia, transphobia, and homophobia within the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø. Attendees are encouraged to participate in conversations that explore the various ways the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø can nurture, affirm, and support 2SLGBTQ+ students, staff, families, community organizations, and community members while also understanding and addressing manifestations of biphobia, homophobia, and transphobia.Ìý
Additional Background
Racial identity cannot be defined solely by geography, national borders, or citizenship. It is shaped by a complex interplay of factors, including histories of colonization and intersecting identities such as culture, gender identity, language, religion, spirituality, class, and sexuality. This word cloudÌýcaptures the complex nature of students’ ethnic identity at the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø (³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø Student Census, 2023).Ìý
We recognize there are different variations of the existing acronym 2SLGBTQ+ to represent gender and sexual diversity.Ìý While there is no single correct version, we believe it is important to be intentional about the language we use, particularly reflecting on the context we are working in and the communities we work with. The 2SLGBTQ+ is an emerging, fluid, and contested acronym that aims to address social inclusion-exclusion of gender and sexually diverse populations.Ìý
Gender identity and sexual orientations cannot be defined solely by biological assumptions or societal norms. It is shaped by complex and personal experiences, culture, class, race, religion, spirituality, language, and more. Within the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø, this richness is deeply reflected in the student population. Fourteen (14%) of grade 7 to 12 students identify as part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Overall, 3.4% of students identify their gender identity outside of the gender binary. ThisÌýword cloud captures the diverse nature of 2SLGBTQ+ students’ gender identity at the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø (³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø Student Census, 2023).Ìý
