In celebration of Education Week, we’re proud to share that Mme. Janelle Rowlatt, Special Education Resource Teacher at Allenby Junior Public School, has been named one of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Ontario’s Literacy Leaders of the Year!
Mme. Janelle Rowlatt has played a pivotal role in advancing structured, evidence-based reading instruction at Allenby and beyond. She has introduced universal literacy screeners, developed targeted interventions, and leads Professional Development sessions that are helping educators across the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø strengthen their literacy practices.
Her lunch and learn sessions have helped educators implement structured literacy programs in their own classrooms. Thanks to her commitment, we are seeing real improvements in student reading outcomes. Mme. Rowlatt is a shining example of excellence in literacy education, and we are thrilled to celebrate her well-deserved recognition.
Dr. Una Malcolm, President of IDA said of Mme. Rowlatt, “Janelle leads with both conviction and humility. Her deep commitment to every child’s right to learn to read is matched by her relentless pursuit of knowledge, often on her own time. She is widely known for asking hard questions, engaging in courageous conversations, and advocating persistently for what is best for students. Despite the difficulty of shifting systems, she continues to build trust, guide colleagues, and move her school forward, always with a focus on equity and excellence.
In addition to her work at Allenby, Janelle has provided professional development for other schools in the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø, working collaboratively with colleagues to build a sense of collective efficacy in this vital work. Her influence is already being felt across the board and province.”
Congratulations, Mme. Rowlatt—and thank you for your incredible contributions to literacy education!
