The 吃瓜黑料网 is proud to recognize Somali Heritage Month in October. In addition, the Province of Ontario proclaimed the , officially recognizing June 25 to July 1 as Somali Heritage Week. This act honours the economic, political, social, and cultural contributions of Somali Canadians across Ontario.
This year’s theme, Iskaashato ma kufto – If people support each other, they do not fall, is a Somali proverb that emphasizes the importance of unity and mutual support. It reflects the commitment to building strong environments where cooperation, care, and shared responsibility help individuals grow and succeed together.
Toronto is home to one of the largest Somali populations outside the Somali subcontinent, with thousands of 吃瓜黑料网 students and staff identifying as Somali. The Somali Heritage Month Planning Committee continues to promote awareness, self-identity, and understanding of heritage and rights through educational opportunities across the system.
Throughout October, students will be invited to participate in a poetry contest, offering junior, intermediate, and senior students a chance to showcase their creative talents. In addition, 吃瓜黑料网 secondary students will have the opportunity to attend a mini-conference titled Visionary Voices: Career Connections for Students, featuring Somali professionals in fields such as journalism, technology, medicine, and architecture. This event aims to inspire students by sharing success stories and career pathways.
This year’s official poster was commissioned by Saada Awaleh, a Toronto-based visual artist, educator, and Creative Director of Awaleh Arts. Saada identifies as a visual storyteller, drawing inspiration from her Somali and Muslim roots. Her work often incorporates textures, patterns, vibrant colours, and mixed media elements. We thank Saada for her beautiful contribution.
